Wander the alley and enjoy its lush canopy of trees, quaint charm, and numerous experiences. You’ll forget you’re in the heart of a bustling tourist hub.
Promiscuous Past
Maiden Lane, formerly Morton Street, was once SF's notorious red-light district in the mid-19th century, comparable to the infamous Barbary Coast. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, the area and surrounding city were devastated. As San Francisco rebuilt and grew, Maiden Lane became a thriving commercial hub. Some believe the street was renamed as a subtle nod to the women who worked there, while others think it was meant to replicate the Maiden Lanes of London and New York City.
Today, this pedestrian-only alleyway is a relaxing escape from the bustling Union Square. With high-end shops, cocktail bars, and salons, Maiden Lane continues to evolve with the ever-changing city surrounding it.
Architectural History
This hidden architectural gem is a unique stop on any SF architectural tour. Designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright himself, this building is the only one of its kind in San Francisco. Its clean lines and distinct geometric interior are a testament to Wright's innovative design philosophy, making it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts. Isaia, a luxury retailer, now occupies the building. The interior was recently revitalized to pay homage to its legacy while embracing the future of luxury retail.
Built in 1948, this architectural gem was Wright’s prototype for the internationally famous Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
